The process of this nutritional shift in me has been slow. I didn't grow up eating fresh whole foods, my parents just weren't educated that way, they didn't know or understand themselves. So I have spent years ridding myself of food addictions to Pepsi, sugar, wheat, processed foods, junk food. Food addictions are a whole other topic.(Feeding myself a fake love by eating unhealthy food).
So this awakening process has been slowly training my body/mind to understand, truly understand what I was putting into it mattered. Loving myself enough to care what I was eating.
While many people may not be affected by gluten, I assert that many, many people are affected by it and aren't aware of it in themselves. That has been my process. It is something that traditional medicine isn't truly embracing yet. We aren't teaching it schools or hospitals.
Gluten is a tricky lil bugger.. Before I just sort of got used to the pain, inflammation and fatigue in my body thinking it was food related(not knowing which), then gluten related. Then I couldn't get used to it anymore.
If you have any digestive issues at all I recommend reading on. And even if you don't, just to educate yourself and your loved ones. Gluten causes a myriad of problems in the digestive track, which can and often do lead to other full body systemic problems. The digestive tract is your first line of immune response/defense in the body. When one weakens their digestive tract health, they can open themselves to a host of other bodily problems. So many.
This is a blog to get people deeper into the gut, into their intestines and colon, to not take for granted the delicate and beautiful living organic digestive tract of your body.
Gluten has only been around for a few generations and it is made because it mass produces, it grows wheat fast and produces high yields. Traditionally the old diets didn't have to worry about this because people were eating native wheat, yet now we have hybrid wheat which just isn't the same plant as generations ago. So with increases in populations came the 'need' to make wheat grow faster and produced higher yields to meet the 'need'. Thus gluten.
Studies are now showing that many of us cannot digest gluten. It is not meant for our bodies to digest. And when something is ingested in the, small intestine, colon etc..and is not supposed to be there..the body and its wonderful healing desire...will attack it to get rid of it. Think of it like a bacteria or a virus entering into your body(cold and flu)...your body will produce an inflammatory response to get the bacteria or virus out(fever, increase in white blood cells). Depending on your immune system strength..the body can kick out the virus or bacteria. But like some diseases if too much virus or bacteria is in the body the body cannot fight it effectively.
Gluten is something that many people's intestines cannot digest so the intestines and colon will create an inflammatory..process. Gluten is everywhere and in many things, many processed foods, shampoo, thickening agents of stamps and envelopes etc. It basically agitates your intestines to the point for some people of inflammation, polyps, tiny pockets or sores. Read on.
Our digestive health carries healthy flora and fauna in it, usually. But for many people gluten can and does start a chain reaction that can cause the healthy flora and fauna to be wiped out.
Many people with digestive disorders are being given antibiotics without being educated on what gluten is doing to the digestive tract. Why antibiotics don't work on gluten, or for people with digestive disorders? Because the antibiotics don't kill the gluten because gluten is not a bacteria. They may kill the bacteria that get in from weakened intestines and colon(due to weak intestinal flora and fauna)...but even after the antibiotics most people keep eating gluten and continue to weaken their intestines.
Gluten causes the digestive track to become inflamed and then the intestines/colon will start to weaken because of this. In this weakened phase the healthy flora and fauna I mentioned above get attacked too and get overwhelmed and can't do their job of weeding out harmful bacteria, viruses etc. When the intestines and colon are weakened this way it leaves a persons gut(intestine, colon) more open for bacteria and viruses to set in. And if a person isn't replacing their healthy flora and fauna over time with good probiotics, fermented foods, yogurt and great nutritional supplementation then the intestinal track can be an open wound in ways. Truly. Many of the digestive disorders I mention below are literally wounds of the digestive tract, that can be healed.
There are many 'digestive' disorders. Speaking with digestive educator Joshua Tucker and R.N/ functional medicine practitioner Kerri Knox, has taught me a great amount. They have helped me understand that all digestive disorders all lead back to one cause-gluten intolerance. The body will express this intolerance differently in relation to how healthy or not healthy one's digestive tract is. Thus producing different 'forms' of digestive disorders.
Here are some digestive disorders; Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Diverticulitis, Chron's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac's Disease. Even colon cancer is now being linked to gluten intolerance as well.
The digestive disorders are all different forms or diagnosis' of the same thing, weakened digestive systems that allow bacteria, virus, parasites, inflammation and irritation to occur. If it gets really bad the thin lining of the intestinal tract can become truly weakened and thinner..thus causing leaky gut syndrome. So the nutrients of the food going into one's body do not get truly digested but rather leak out of the intestines...thus causing the body to attack these nutrients(because our food is supposed to stay in our intestines) and then from these weakened states other auto immune disorders(the body attacking itself) can appear as Fibromyagia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Rheumatoid Arthritis. Studies show too gluten can lead also to ADD, ADHD, Autism. Children too are greatly affected by gluten intolerance.
So Leaky gut is.. severe weakening of the lining of the digestive tract..and this will no allow food nutrients to be properly absorbed, thus they get leaked back into the body. Much like those old above ground swimming pools with linings in them, if the pool linings got weakened, leaks would occur. Gluten causes the digestive lining to be weakened.
I think on some level this was happening to me over time and slowly I am starting to re-build my digestive tract.
The wonderful thing about the human body is that is can heal. So the path for me..is to keep healing my intestines(and keeping them strong and healthy), with tons of probiotics(healthy), nutritional supplements, fermented foods, raw foods, sprouted foods. No gluten at all.
I feel blessed in many ways to understand all of this now.
You may or may not truly understand this information or you may not want to give up gluten like I didn't want to. Either way you or someone you know is being affected by gluten intolerance. If you don't understand it...please feel free to call me and I can explain it more.
If you do have digestive disorders or autoimmune disorders and are eating gluten, I invite you to give up gluten for a while and start on probiotics, lots of them...and healthy vitamins. Just to see it helps. Even if you don't have digestive disorders or autoimmune disorders, but other problems with your body, it could still be gluten related, so do some research and try no gluten for a while. No gluten has for sure helped me and I know it can help others.
Many blessings and love too...
