I have noticed that many times when people ask how often is a massage needed is because they haven't been educated on the true benefits of receiving regular massage and only come in when their body is hurting.
The benefits of massage are numerous with stress reduction and pain relief being the top 2 in my opinion. Experiencing regular stress reduction and pain relief from regular massage can help move acute conditions to chronic and can help alleviate many chronic conditions.
I also tell them the answer to the above questions depends on many factors. Below I have listed 7 of the most common factors I have found affect how often a massage is needed or wanted.
7 of the most common factors I have found affect how often to get a massage
- Acute health conditions
- Chronic health conditions
- If a person thinks massage is a treat/or luxury
- An overly stressful or physically depending job
- Listening or not listening to their body
If a person really enjoys receiving massage and has all the money and time in the world then receiving massage once a week is great. This scenario is rare for most people.
I usually tell people that for general health maintenance getting a massage every 3 to 4 weeks is beneficial.
If someone has an acute health condition, then massage once a week for a few weeks can be very beneficial and then move into massage every 3 to 4 weeks.
For people with chronic health conditions, I leave it up to the person and them listening to their body. Some people with chronic conditions come every 2 weeks or less.
For people who have high stress and demanding jobs I recommend receiving a massage at least every 2 weeks.
Also many times people have a hard time taking care of themselves or believing they deserve to feel good, so massage for them can seem like just a treat or a luxury. I lovingly encourage people to allow themselves to take care of themselves and their bodies on a regular basis by receiving regular massage.
There are therapeutic recommendations I make for how many massages or how often and those are case by case basis.
In general I encourage people to listen to their bodies for when to get a massage, which some people have a difficult time doing. Massage can help with that inner listening too because it can bring a person into direct hands on connection with their body.
Apart from needing more than one massage for acute or chronic health conditions, the answer to how often to get a massage many times comes down to connecting with one's body and listening to it combined with time, and money and the level of stress at one's job or in their life.
