What is the message your muscles are trying to tell me?
Sometimes they tell me they want a deep tissue massage, but when I explore deeper they are really just wanting to breathe.
Many people who come to me for deep tissue massage assume that deep tissue must hurt to be effective. This is an awareness that does not realize that the deepest release comes with focus, presence and inner surrender. Deep tissue massage does not have to painful to be deeply effective.
I have found that many times a clients muscles are simply crying out for attention. Their muscles think they need to feel the pain of the massage to feel alive.
Through therapeutic touch the muscles want to experience being heard and payed attention to on a deep cellular level. For some people this is felt through pain. However, expansive healing comes in a deeper form of conscious awareness and cellular focus. This is the feeling of healing from the space within that is the essence of who we truly are. This vibration of energy is full of love, light and peace. I approach my deep muscle therapy with a listening and intention of where in a muscle is the space for it to let go. This is why speeding through a deep tissue massage has never worked for me.
It is inspiring to sit on a muscle and wait for it to let go. To find that edge of a muscular binding and drop off of it into the internal abyss of energy release. This cannot happen in a 15 second forearm down the spinal muscles. It takes a meditative focus and presence to sit with a part of the muscle that is tight and to wait for that muscle to breathe. To listen and wait for it to surrender, let go and breathe.
The cells breathe, the muscles breathe and healing happens. When it does this my client always breathes deeply as well. It’s all connected. This is a deep cellular breathing where all the cells in the body feel release and the flow of healing energy moves deeply throughout the entire body. It’s always there, it’s just re-awakening the cells and muscles to it. It’s the deep space of our internal existence-healed and perfect. What affects a muscle (and a clients) ability to breathe from a deep cellular level?
It can be dietary choices, the food we eat directly affects our cellular and muscular health. Foods that are processed, caffeine, and sugar all affect our muscular and cellular health.
Whole, organic, raw foods flow an energy to us that is pure and beautiful, it can be felt and it is very alive. I have found and felt that a lack of magnesium in the diet affects the muscles ability to let go. Magnesium is needed for muscle relaxation. I can actually feel when a client is deficient in magnesium, the muscles have a particular feel to them. Inadequate water intake affects the flow of energy in our bodies too.Our mindset affects a massage as well. If the mind is stressed then the body will be too. Sometimes it is difficult for people to allow themselves to relax because their mind is on the go all the time. In this case the inner bindings of muscles are actually from the mental bindings in someone. Once they let go of the mental bindings, their cells and muscles can let go too.
Other times it can be a simple lack of awareness of inner surrender. Unless we have been brought up to learn meditation and deep intentional surrender, our bodies will to tend to stay in a place of constant movement.
If we trained children how to meditate and intentionally relax, there would be less stress and much more happiness in the world. Our society tends to focus on being on the go all time and this creates stress in the body.
There are many people who actually feel guilty about being still and calm, they think if they are not producing and moving that something is wrong. We cannot experience that deep internal healing energy by being on the go. In fact we can actually be more productive when we give ourselves the time to surrender and let go. There is much more energy available to us.
We can actually create more by resting and healing. A person does not have receive a deep tissue massage to experience this space, however for those people who love deep tissue massage it can be fun using that modality as a pathway, especially when combined with acupressure massage or trigger point therapy.
For people with injuries this focus is great for finding the spots in muscles and tissues that need healing flow and structural unwinding.
I see all kinds of clients and each massage is unique.
There are lovers of sports massage, deep tissue massage, energy healing massage, and relaxation massage. Within each is that space of inner knowing that loves to breathe from the deepest space within. There are beautiful spaces within our mind/body.
My passion with massage is to guide my clients to remembering that space in themselves of the inner language that transcends all outer language.”
